Hi Connie,
Thanks for contacting us. With Focal Soften, I suggest trying to increase the Focal Size slider, and then reposition the focal point by dragging on your image.
If you still can’t achieve the result you want, you can use the Blur effect (about a page down from Focal Soften) and with this effect you can paint your image to bring back in sharpness.
Let us know if you need any further assistance!

Hi – I am also trying to blur background but am having trouble. If I use the focal soften (above) I don’t want a perfect circle in focus – can this shape be changed? So I went to the blur tool and when attempting to use the paint the blur tool, the option still blurs the entire image. Hoe to I select the portion that will not be blurred? I would like to isolate the person in the image and blur the rest. Is this possible? Thanks for your help.

Hi Ruth,
Thanks for reaching out to us! If you go to the Blur effect then you can paint your photo to make any areas sharp. You do this by simply dragging your mouse over the photo while holding down the mouse button.
Let us know if you have any other questions!
