How do you use the burning and cloning feature on Ribbet? I am usually pretty good on figuring things out by playing around with features (like the plastic surgery) but this one I cannot figure out.

      Hi Liz,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

The Dodge and Burn tools are used to subtly lighten and darken areas of your photograph. This is most commonly used to improve the contrast of specific areas (as opposed to the entire photo). An easy way to remember which tool is which is to think of “burning” as in burning toast, making it darker. The effect is subtle, but if you paint over the same area a number of times you can gradually make it more dramatic.

Cloning on the other hand is copying one area of your photograph to another. You select a “source” (by clicking on your photo), then paint onto the “target” (by clicking and dragging). This basically “clones” (or copies) the source area onto the target area. This is particularly useful when you want to remove an object from a photo – you can clone a nearby area over it (for example you could clone a wall over a person you wanted to remove). You can also use it to duplicate features of a photo, such as to add more clouds to a sky by cloning an existing cloud.

I cannot change a yellowish color to a very light brown on a person’s hair. I have tried burning, cloning from a different area, highlights, and every variation within these. They all seem to deepen the yellow. I also tried the tool that decreases shine. Any tips? Thanks

      Hi Lee,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

There are many different ways to achieve this. One way is:

      – Open up the Effects tab > Sketch tool
      – Change the color to #662800 (you can enter the code after you click the color selector above the color rectangle)
      – Change the Blend Mode dropdown to Hardlight
      – Paint onto the hair
      – You can also then adjust the Fade to find a natural looking level. You could also experiment with other brown colors.

Hi, I’m new to Ribbet, trying to clone. I click on source selection, then the area of the photo I want to clone, then the area that I want to paint over with the clone, but nothing happens. I put the brush hardness up to 100 to make it obvious whether it was working. Please help!

        Hi Kirsten,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

In order to use Clone, simply:

        1. Open the Clone tool
        2. Click the area you want to copy from. This is the “source” position.
        3. Click and drag over the area you want to paste to.

To change the source position you can click the “Select Source” button and then repeat steps 2 and 3.

That should be it. Does that work for you?

I have the premium membership and I am trying to use the burning tool to fix a couple of photos that were taken in mottled sunlight. I have several spots on faces that are almost white. I open the burning tool, select highlights, adjust brush size, click over areas and do not see any change. What am I doing wrong?

        Hi Steve,

Thanks for reaching out to us! It doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong. I’m not certain if it will give you the result you’re after, but you can keep painting over and over again and the result should become more dramatic.

But, to remove the spot of sunlight altogether using Burn will most likely not look natural. Depending on the size of the spots of sunlight you’re trying to remove, it may be better to try using Clone to copy a nearby area over the sunlight, or even some of the Touch-up tools to achieve the result. It may not be an easy task.

How do I add an image or “layer” an image to another image? For instance, I am trying to add a logo to an existing photo.

        Hi Anita,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

To layer images in our program version, simply upload them to the Photo Basket (at the very bottom of the editor) and drag them onto your main image.

        Hi Julie,

Thanks for reaching out to us!

We haven’t yet added Clone to our new online version, but we will be adding it in the coming weeks along with other features like Frames and Stickers.

In the meantime you can still use our old version of Ribbet – it’s now available as a program which can be downloaded from ribbet.com/download. It has all the features you’re used to including Clone and will continue to work indefinitely into the future. Once installed it will add a Ribbet icon to your Windows desktop / Mac icon dock – you can launch Ribbet from that (no need to return to our website). You can also sign into it with your existing Ribbet account.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

        Hi Serina,

Thanks for reaching out to us and sorry to hear about your experience!

I wanted to let you know 2 things:

        – Firstly, you can still use the old version of Ribbet. It’s now available as a program, which can be downloaded from ribbet.com/download. It’s identical to the previous (Flash) version, has all the same functionality including Clone and will continue to work indefinitely into the future. Once installed it will add a Ribbet icon to your Windows desktop / Mac icon dock – you can launch Ribbet from that (no need to return to our website). You can also sign into it with your existing Ribbet account.

        – I also wanted to let you know that we’re working incredibly hard on our new online version: to simplify its layout, fix all the bugs and performance issues and add in all the features including Frames, Stickers and Pro tools like Clone. I think over the next few weeks you’ll notice a huge difference as we release these fixes. You can track our progress here.

By the way the undo icon is to the top right of your image in the new online version.

If you have any further questions or feedback, please let us know.

        – Ben
