  Hi Marjorie. If you’re trying to color a black & white photo then you will be better off using some of the Touch-up effects than the “Hand Tinted” tool which selectively brings existing color out in a photo.
  
  This video made by a Ribbet user may be helpful to you as it illustrates how to color a black & white photo using these Touch-up tools. If you’re trying to achieve something else please let us know!

  Yes, the Hand Tinted effect is for color pictures only and is for bringing out highlights of existing color. It’s suited to changing the color balance of photos rather than coloring black & white photos.
