Hi Sean, When saving, in order to maintain the transparency you need to choose “PNG” as the format (instead of “JPG”). This is because JPG files don’t support transparency whereas PNG files do.

Could you change a JPG to a PNG with a transparent background? Thanks! 🙂

Hi Martha, Thanks for contacting us. You can do this: First create a Blank Canvas by going to the Libary Tab > Start, and make sure you tick Transparent. Then drag on the JPG from the photo basket. You can then use the Eraser Tool to erase areas from the JPG. Lastly Save as a PNG. Let us know if that’s unclear or you need any further assistance.

Hi Jack, Thanks for contacting us. To edit transparent PNGs it’s necessary to first go to the Library > Start tab and create a Blank Canvas (make sure that you tick the Transparent checkbox). You can then drag on your transparent PNG from the Photo Basket at the bottom of the editor, and it will maintain its transparency. Let us know if you have any further questions or problems!

I was wondering it their was an easier way to do this other than the eraser tool. After all every time I to it my edges come out bumpy. Do you have something where I can make me edges smoother?

Hi Sammy, You should be able to make the edges smoother by adjusting the “Brush Hardness” which appears as a slider once you click the Eraser button.

The other way you can remove content is using the Effects tab > Doodle tool (towards the end of the page) which can be used to paint a flat color over your photo (and therefore turn the background into a single color).

Let us know if you have any further questions!

      hi

how does one put effects on transparent pictures ?
like the greek islands, los angeles etc effects. it seems as if they can only be applied to non transparent pictures. also, i found that once you drag transparent pictures in to the main area for editing, they slightly become blury when comparing with the original. there’s definately a quality loss. – thanks for sheding light in to these 2 issues.

Hi Steve, Thanks for contacting us! You are correct that some effects do not behave as you might expect on transparent pictures. This is unfortunately a limitation of these effects.

Dragging on transparent pictures from the Photo Basket shouldn’t result in any blurring. Double-check the quality of the original transparent image, as it may be that it is slightly blurry. Sometimes there is a slight delay after dragging on your image before the image fully downloads and sharpens up.

I follow the instructions given on Aug 26, but when I drag my round png file from my history in the photo basket up onto a transparent background, my round picture has a square white background. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Heather, Thanks for contacting us! The issue you’ve run into is a current limitation of the History functionality (transparency isn’t supported). To preserve the transparency of your item, you need to re-upload it and drag it on from the “Get from Computer” list of uploads (as opposed to the “History” list in the Photo Basket). If you don’t have a copy on your computer to re-upload, you can open it from the Library > History tab and then re-save it to your computer.

Let us know if anything’s unclear. This limitation to items in History is something we’re aware of and will fix in the future.

Thank you for the info about how to get a transparent canvas (I also looked up how to change canvas colors and found useful information in there.) I am very glad to have the info and tools I need to create what I want.

I don’t see how you get the black canvas you keep referring to.

        Hi Loretta,

On desktop the Blank Canvas button is on the Start tab, right at the beginning when you open the editor. It’s a large rectangle button up the top right “BLANK CANVAS”.

On mobile it can be found along the bottom tabs except on iPad, where it’s on the left bar.

Any other questions, please let us know!
        – Regards, The Ribbet Team
